Things You Need To Know About Kratom Potency

Mitragyna speciosa, commonly known as kratom, is a tropical evergreen tree indigenous to the Southeast Asian countries of Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The tree is also fairly widespread in Papua New Guinea and Myanmar, as well as the Philippines.

In most countries where kratom grows indigenously, locals have consumed extracts from this plant for hundreds of years to relieve various ailments. Today, kratom can be used for its potential health benefits.  Some people also use the herb to treat chronic fatigue, stress and anxiety, insomnia, and erectile dysfunction.

But as a new or aspiring kratom user, it’s important to note that kratom products vary significantly in terms of their overall effects. Potency is one of the significant factors determining kratom’s effects, and in this post, we uncover everything there is to know about kratom potency.

What Is Kratom Potency?

Kratom potency refers to the strength or concentration of kratom in a product.

Now, there’s no standard unit for measuring the strength of kratom in a product. However, the concentration is commonly indicated in grams.

It may also appear as a percentage or fraction of the product’s total composition.

What Determines Kratom Potency?

One kratom product may have a potency of, say, 2 grams, whereas the second product could have a potency of 10 grams. Ordinarily, the second product should deliver more intense effects than the first. But as you’re about to find out, that’s just a theoretical way of looking at it.

First off, it’s important to mention that the concentration of kratom is usually expressed in terms of the other constituents in a product. So, it’s essential not to take the 2 grams and 10 grams figures at face value. Instead, you’d want to go ahead and establish the product’s total composition as a way of predicting kratom’s overall effects.

For instance, 2 grams of kratom in a 10-gram kratom powder is more potent than 10 grams of kratom in a 100-gram kratom powder. In the first case, the kratom percentage in the product would be worked out as (2/10) x 100 = 20%. In the second scenario, the kratom percentage in the product would be (10/100) x 100 = 10%.

Strain is the second factor determining the potency of kratom in a product. Note that the kratom tree produces numerous strains. These strains are also known as variants or cultivars.

Two products can have the same kratom concentration but still differ in their overall effects. So, the numerical concentration of kratom alone shouldn’t be your only consideration when shopping for kratom-infused products based on potency.

For instance, Maeng Da and White Borneo are the most potent kratom strains. But even these strains differ in their interactions with the body, with Maeng Da known to offer more intense effects. It’s prudent enough to establish the potency percentage of the two strains before ordering your next dose of kratom. However, you’d do yourself more justice to know that Maeng Da is more powerful than its White Borneo counterpart.

And here’s where the whole aspect of strain gets even more interesting.

Kratom strains are deemed strong based on the specific effects they create, for instance. White Vein kratom produces energizing effects, whereas Red Veins are famous for their sedating properties. It would be illogical to compare the effects of these strains side by side since they’re generally administered for different purposes.

Now, three things ought to be abundantly clear up to this point regarding the factors that determine kratom potency;

  • Kratom potency is primarily determined by the total percentage of kratom in a product
  • Kratom potency differs across the strains
  • Kratom potency varies depending on desired effects

What Are The Bioactive Chemicals In Kratom?

The kratom tree produces scores of bioactive phytochemicals. These compounds are primarily made up of alkaloids, with the most popular ones being mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.

Mitragynine is the more abundant of the two widespread alkaloids in kratom. This compound was first isolated in the early 1920s. It has a chemical formula of C23H30N2O4 and a molecular weight of 398.50 g/mol.

Mitragynine is insoluble in water. However, the compound dissolves in conventional organic solvents like alcohols, acetone, and chloroform. That explains why industrially-prepared kratom products usually come dissolved in organic solvents.

7-Hydroxymitragynine is less abundant than mitragynine. This alkaloid occurs in trace amounts in most kratom species.

7-Hydroxymitragynine was first identified in 1993. It has a molecular formula of C23H30N2O5 and a molecular weight of 414.50 g/mol.

Collectively, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine account for the vast majority of kratom’s effects. That may include pain relief, treating anxiety, boosting energy levels, combating insomnia, etc.

Interestingly, the more abundant mitragynine also happens to be the lesser potent of the two alkaloids. But once consumed, mitragynine usually converts into 7-hydroxymitragynine, which is thought to be 13 times more potent than morphine.

It’s also worth noting that mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine aren’t the only widely-studied compounds in kratom. There are also rhynchophylline and epicatechin. These two compounds are particularly noted for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Besides alkaloids, other compounds in kratom include flavonoids, polyphenols, terpenoid saponins, and glycosides.

Wrap Up

Numerous factors account for kratom’s overall potency, ranging from kratom concentration in a product to strains.

But despite the kratom product you intend to use, remember to observe the cardinal rule of moderation. Note that kratom can produce adverse reactions if overdosed.
